The New York Islanders are now 5-1-1 in their last seven games, after defeating the Philadelphia Flyers 4-1 tonight.
The Islanders had a strong first period, despite taking a couple of penalties. They outshot the Flyers 13-8 and generated some quality chances off the rush while managing to sustain pressure in Philadelphia’s end as the frame was winding down. They couldn’t capitalize, however, and the game remained scoreless after the first period.
The Islanders let their foot off the gas through the first half of the second period and Ilya Sorokin was forced to make some great saves. As a result, Brock Nelson was able to open the scoring, dragging the puck around Rasmus Ristolainen and firing it past Martin Jones to put the Islanders up. Then just after that, Robin Salo did a great job walking the blue line and opening a lane, then fired a shot through traffic that deflected in off Casey Cizikas’ stick to extend the lead. However, the Flyers got on the board before the end of the frame, as Travis Konecny’s shot took a wild bounce off Noah Dobson and in, leaving the Islanders with a 2-1 lead through 40 minutes.
The Islanders got back their two-goal lead about five minutes into the third period, as Anthony Beauvillier buried a puck in-close. Then after a strong period where the Islanders allowed just six shots, Matt Martin sealed the deal with an empty net goal, with a little less than 1:30 to go.
The Islanders certainly allowed their share of chances about midway through the game, but Ilya Sorokin was there to keep the team in it. His play was definitely a huge factor in the win.
New York did generate 31 shots and managed to outshoot the Flyers in doing so. That said, penalty trouble was an issue, with the Islanders allowing Philadelphia four power play opportunities.
Regardless, it’s an important bounce back win after their loss against the Washington Capitals on Saturday. The Islanders will be back in action tomorrow night as they face the Flyers once again, this time in Philadelphia.
