The New York Islanders got back to .500 tonight, defeating the Ottawa Senators 4-1.
Once again, the Islanders got down early. Nick Holden took a pass from Tyler Ennis and put it on net, then once Ilya Sorokin couldn't handle the shot, the puck trickled in off him to put Ottawa on the board under two minutes into the game. However, the Islanders actually did respond with a strong first period and ended up tying the game before the end of the frame, as Anthony Beauvillier put a loose puck through Anton Forsberg.
New York put together another strong frame in the second period and took the lead when Oliver Wahlstrom put a rebound through Forsberg. Then later in the frame, Scott Mayfield got a pass to Mathew Barzal, who one-timed a shot from a bad angle to make it a 3-1 game after 40 minutes.
New York did let up a bit in the third period, but Adam Pelech still managed to extend the lead, going to the net to take a pass from Scott Mayfield and backhanded a shot past Forsberg. The Islanders hung on after that, resulting in a 4-1 win.
This was a solid game for the Islanders and it was a huge bonus to get Ryan Pulock back in the lineup. His loss has been a huge blow for New York over the last two and a half months and hopefully this is the boost they need.
There’s still a ways to go for the Islanders to climb back up the standings and their recent losses have set them back. As of now, they still sit ninth in the Eastern Conference in points percentage. Regardless, they can’t drop games like these and it was an important two points.
New York will be back in action tomorrow against the Seattle Kraken.
