The Islanders opened the scoring about halfway through the first period, when Travis Zajac put a rebound past Tuukka Rask. However, the Bruins would respond on a power play before the end of the frame, when David Pastrnak made a great pass to Brad Marchand, who beat Semyon Varlamov to tie the game. It was a pretty even first period overall and the teams went into the intermission tied 1-1.
The Islanders blew the game wide open in the second period though, scoring three goals in the frame. First, Brock Nelson made a great play to poke the puck by Matt Grzelcyk, then went in alone to beat Rask. Then about seven minutes later, after a flurry of chances on the rush for the Islanders, Nelson scored his second goal of the game, as Josh Bailey capitalized on a turnover and put it to the front of the net, where Nelson was able to deke out Rask. Then with a few minutes to go in the period, Matt Grzelcyk’s rough game continued, losing two different puck battles which led to Kyle Palmieri putting in a loose puck to give New York a 4-1 lead going into the third period.
In the third period, Brad Marchand got the Bruins back within two goals, winning a battle at the front of the net and tucking the puck past Varlamov. However, the Islanders did a great job hanging onto their lead, limiting Boston to just five shots in the frame. New York would score two goals late in the game to secure the game and a 6-2 win.
While the Islanders stole a win in Game 5, they had a really strong performance in Game 6 to book their spot in the third round. The team kept finding ways to win throughout the series and last night’s win was a very well-rounded performance.
The Islanders will now face the Tampa Bay Lightning, as a third round rematch from last year.
