The New York Islanders fell in a shootout to the San Jose Sharks last night, losing 4-3.
It marked Zdeno Chara’s 1652nd career NHL game, which broke the record for most games played by a defenseman in NHL history.
It took most of the first period, but the Islanders opened the scoring about 15 minutes into the game, as Brock Nelson deflected in Scott Mayfield’s point shot. The Sharks responded only a minute later though, with Alexander Barabanov putting a nice, low shot past Ilya Sorokin on a power play to tie the game. Then under two minutes after that, Jasper Weatherby threw the puck to the net through traffic and it found its way in as well, and just like that, the Islanders were down heading into the intermission.
The Islanders really outplayed San Jose in the second frame, putting 17 shots on goal and managed to tie the game, as Zach Parise took a pass from Sebastian Aho to score his 400th career goal. Logan Couture put San Jose back up by a goal on another power play later but New York responded once again, with Adam Pelech’s point shot finding a way through James Reimer.
New York dominated the third period, outshooting San Jose 13-4. Again though, they couldn’t capitalize on any of their opportunities and once the game went to overtime, we saw more of the same, where the Islanders completely controlled the play but couldn’t convert.
In the shootout, after Anthony Beauvillier was stopped as the first shooter, Logan Couture beat Ilya Sorokin five-hole to put the Sharks up. Then after Mathew Barzal and Tomas Hertl couldn’t score, the pressure was on Brock Nelson, who was stopped, as San Jose held on for the win.
The loss came despite the Islanders putting together a really strong back 40 minutes and a great game overall. While they outshot San Jose by a massive 47-28 margin, once again, the Islanders couldn’t convert on enough of their chances.
It also marks yet another game where the Islanders dropped the extra point. They’ve won two of 10 games that have gone past regulation this year.
Credit to Zach Parise, who scored his 400th NHL goal. In his last 16 games, Parise has scored six goals and 13 points and has turned things around to be a great addition for New York.
The Islanders’ next game comes tomorrow night against the Los Angeles Kings.
