The New York Islanders announced today that head coach Barry Trotz has been relieved of his duties.
Trotz has spent the last four seasons as the team’s head coach, bringing the Islanders to the postseason three times, including two trips to the third round. Trotz also won the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year with the Islanders in 2019.
General manager Lou Lamoriello said there’s no timetable for a replacement to be announced.
This move really comes out of nowhere and seems so counterproductive that you’re left thinking that there has to be something more here. Trotz has been a key reason for the Islanders’ success over the last few years and he’s helped turn an average team into one of the best defensive groups in hockey. It’s hard to justify that bringing in anyone else in Trotz’s place will have any better impact for the Islanders and as an initial reaction, I don’t know what Lou Lamoriello and management were possibly thinking here.
