The New York Islanders have continued their disastrous slide since returning to action after having games postponed, with the team now on an 11-game losing streak.
It’s worth noting they’ve picked up a point in each of their three losses since games were postponed, against the San Jose Sharks, Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Blackhawks. That said, you can’t help but feel as though both the break and the quality of competition they faced make for a squandered opportunity to get the team back on track.
Last night, the Islanders had an alright game and did limit quality chances for the Blackhawks, while forcing Marc-Andre Fleury to make some good saves. They also picked up two goals with a man advantage (one of those being on the power play and the other coming with the goalie pulled), even if at times in the last few minutes, it just felt like the plan was to get the puck to Oliver Wahlstrom, no matter how bad of an angle he’d be shooting from.
But the crowd growing restless near the end of the game – every time the Islanders passed up on a shot or lost possession – really summed up feelings towards the team's current predicament. Noah Dobson’s goal was a great moment but the Islanders followed it up by playing very conservatively in overtime and seemingly just trying to get to a shootout, then weren’t able to score in that shootout.
The Islanders are having significant scoring issues and continue to not be able to generate consistent chances. They have 13 goals in the 11 losses and while five goals over their last two outings is an improvement, the team obviously isn’t able to produce offensively. It could be argued the Islanders are on the right track after picking up points in their last few games but they've also continued to average only about 25 shots per game lately.
They’ll now face the Ottawa Senators tomorrow, in a great opportunity to snap their losing streak. While it’s still early in the year, the Islanders now find themselves way behind the rest of the pack in the Metropolitan Division and desperately need to pick up a win.
