The New York Islanders have named Lane Lambert as their new head coach.
The news comes after the Islanders fired Barry Trotz last week, who had spent four years as the team’s head coach.
Lambert has spent the last four years as an assistant coach with the Islanders, after joining the team in 2018 alongside Trotz. He had previously also spent time as Trotz’s assistant coach with both the Nashville Predators and Washington Capitals.
The 2022-23 season will mark Lambert’s first as an NHL head coach.
In other news, Zdeno Chara was also named as a finalist for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded to the player best exemplifying "perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.”
Chara is 45 years old and broke the NHL record for career games played by a defenseman this year. Montreal Canadiens’ goalie Carey Price and Philadelphia Flyers’ forward Kevin Hayes were named as the other two finalists.
