The New York Islanders weren’t able to sweep their weekend back-to-back, falling 3-0 to the Carolina Hurricanes last night.

Hudson Fasching came back into the lineup in place of Anthony Beauvillier, who had exited Friday’s game with an injury.

We saw a relatively quiet opening frame, with neither team giving up (or generating) much. Both teams had power play opportunities but neither could capitalize, as the game remained scoreless through 20 minutes.

The Hurricanes did end up opening the scoring in the second period, as Paul Stastny took a pass from Andrei Svechnikov at the side of the net and buried into the open goal. The Islanders generated essentially no offense in the frame, managing a measly three shots on goal.

The Islanders then found themselves down by two pretty early in the final frame, as Brent Burns’ point shot was tipped in by Jesperi Kotkaniemi, to make it 2-0. Things didn’t get any better, as a little later in the frame, Noah Dobson turned the puck over down low and it eventually found its way out to Jordan Staal, who scored to put New York down by three. The Islanders didn’t get much going after that, and fired only six shots on goal in the third period, as Carolina cruised to the win.

It was a pretty uninspired performance from the Islanders, managing just 16 shots through the entire night and very few legitimate chances. They had a bit of momentum on a first period power play where they had a couple opportunities, but that was basically it. They really struggled to get anything going.

That said, there were factors working against them. The Hurricanes were coming off a bit of a break, while New York was on the second half of a back-to-back set. While they basically generated no offense, they also didn’t give up a ton to Carolina in the way of high-danger chances, which is a small positive. It’s also not like they were facing easy competition and taking two points from a back-to-back set against the Devils and Hurricanes isn’t the worst thing.

As another note, the Islanders’ reverse retros with the fisherman logo looked great on ice.

New York will be back in action on Tuesday, when they kick off a five-game road trip against the Boston Bruins.
