The New York Islanders announced today that they’ve signed defenseman Adam Pelech to an eight-year contract extension, which carries a $5.75 million cap hit.

Pelech is 26 years old and scored four goals and 14 points in 56 regular season games with the Islanders this year. He’s one of the league’s most reliable defenders in his own end and plays a key role on New York’s top pairing, averaging over 21 minutes per game this past season. Pelech is the first of the team’s three key restricted free agents to re-sign, with Anthony Beauvillier and Ilya Sorokin still in need of new deals.

I’ll go more in-depth on the signing in a future article but as a note, I really like this deal for the Islanders. The cap hit is very reasonable, while Pelech gets maximum security with the eight-year term. At just 26 years old, Pelech should remain at the top of his game for the foreseeable future and it’s great to see him staying with the team long-term.
