The New York Islanders signed goaltender Ken Appleby to a two-year contract yesterday, which carries an AAV of $725,000.
It seems as though this was a move made in preparation for this year’s expansion draft. As pointed out by The Athletic’s Arthur Staple, Appleby is now eligible to be selected in the draft, meaning the Islanders can leave him unprotected in order to fulfill their exposure requirements for a goalie.

Appleby is 26 years old and last season, he had a .913 save percentage in 42 games with the ECHL’s Florida Everblades. Appleby was never drafted but originally signed an entry-level contract with the New Jersey Devils back in 2015. He’s split time between the AHL and ECHL since then and has played two games for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers this season.
Appleby was placed on waivers by the Islanders yesterday and cleared today.
