The New York Islanders announced today that they’ve signed forward Mathew Barzal to an eight-year contract extension, which carries a $9.15 million cap hit.
Barzal is 25 years old and is entering his sixth full season with the Islanders. This past season, Barzal scored 15 goals and 59 points in 73 games and over 362 career NHL games, he’s scored at a pace of 21 goals and 70 points per 82 games. He still has a year remaining on his current deal, which carries a $7 million cap hit.
Locking up Barzal long-term is a big win for the Islanders. He’s by far the team’s top forward and this deal will carry him through his prime years. While it may be a little higher than projected (I had expected a range of about $8.5 million or $8.75 million on an eight-year deal), it’s still reasonable value and with the cap likely to rise in the coming years, this should be a solid contract for the Islanders.
