The New York Islanders announced yesterday that they’ve signed KHL forward Maxim Tsyplakov to a one-year, entry-level contract.

Tsyplakov is 25 years old and has spent his entire career in Russia to this point. This past season, he posted his best numbers in the KHL so far, registering 31 goals and 47 points in 65 games with Moscow Spartak. It marked a fairly sizeable jump in production from previous years, with the forward ranking second on the team in goals, and third in points.

The deal carries a $950,000 cap hit, but also includes an additional $1 million worth of performance bonuses.

While the Islanders haven’t had a ton of success with past Russian free agents working out for them, it’s a low-risk, high-reward move for New York. With limited cap space to work with and a need for talent in the forward group, there’s certainly a chance Tsyplakov could crack the Islanders’ roster next season out of training camp.
