The New York Islanders announced yesterday that they’ve signed forward Ross Johnston to a four-year contract extension, which will will kick in for the 2022-23 season. The deal will reportedly carry a $1.1 million cap hit, according to CapFriendly.com.
Johnston is still signed at a $1 million cap hit for the remainder of this season. He’s 27 years old and has played one game with the Islanders this season, and also played 12 games with the team last year.
As for this contract, I’m not sure it was overly necessary but it also won’t hurt the team. Giving Johnston yet another four-year contract almost surely wouldn’t have been necessary to keep him around, given he still hasn’t found a regular spot in the lineup. Cal Clutterbuck’s contract is set to expire this summer, meaning Johnston could end up taking a spot next season, though the team would also be able to bury the contract with no cap implications if necessary, meaning despite the term, the risk is pretty minimal.
