The New York Islanders picked up their third win over the Philadelphia Flyers in the last nine days, holding on for a 4-3 victory.
The night marked Keith Yandle's 965th consecutive NHL game, which breaks the league's all-time record for most consecutive games played.
The Islanders went down under a minute in, as Claude Giroux just threw the puck on net from the corner and somehow beat Ilya Sorokin. It was a terrible goal for Sorokin to give up and as a result, the Islanders were stuck playing from behind right out of the gate. Despite the Islanders actually having a decent period after that and limiting chances for the Flyers while creating some turnovers, Justin Braun put Philadelphia up 2-0 when his point shot went in off Andy Greene’s skate.
New York got one back right after that though, as Noah Dobson’s point shot got through traffic and beat Carter Hart, making it a 2-1 game. Then before the end of the frame, Mathew Barzal shook off Zack MacEwan and continued with the puck down the wing, before putting a pass to Anders Lee, who placed a perfect shot past Hart.
The Islanders managed to take the lead on a power play in the second period, as Zach Parise got a pass through to Mathew Barzal, who beat Hart. The Islanders dominated a lot of the frame after that, outshooting the Flyers 14-4, but they only took a one-goal lead into the third period.
Philadelphia tied the game once again early in the third period, as Gerry Mayhew made a nice move to get out in front and fire the puck past Sorokin. The Islanders pressed after that though and took the lead back later, as Zach Parise finished off a nice passing play, beating Hart with a great shot to make it 4-3 New York. After that, the Islanders did a great job shutting down chances from the Flyers and hung on for the win.
Overall, this was a really strong performance from the Islanders. They outshot the Flyers by a huge 33-17 margin and really controlled the back 40 minutes.
In a way, it was also a bit of a nice change for a team whose goaltending has been key in many of their wins this season to get the two points despite some less-than-stellar goaltending. Again, Sorokin has been excellent this year, but this wasn’t his night.
Zach Parise also continues to make more of an impact offensively for the Islanders, picking up both a goal and an assist tonight. Over his last 13 games, Parise has three goals and eight points.
With the win, the Islanders are back above a .500 points percentage, with a 15-14-6 record. Their next game comes on Thursday against the Los Angeles Kings.
