The New York Islanders will face the Washington Capitals in the first round of the playoffs.

After the Capitals beat the Boston Bruins in round robin play today, they became the third seed in the East. With the Carolina Hurricanes advancing but the Pittsburgh Penguins knocked out, the Islanders became the second-ranked team from the qualifying round to advance, making them the sixth-ranked team in the East.

It should be a pretty close matchup, as the Islanders and Capitals split their four games this season. Each game was also decided by either one or two goals. One issue the Islanders could face is not being able to take advantage of their power play opportunities– New York’s power play ranked 24th in the league, while Washington’s penalty kill ranked sixth in the league.
