The Los Angeles Kings earned their fourth win over the last five games, defeating the New York Rangers 3-1 tonight.
Alex Iafallo and Alex Turcotte entered back into the lineup, while Martin Frk was placed into COVID protocol.
The game started with Cal Petersen making a great save to slide across and deny Ryan Strome. Petersen had to be very good for the first bit of the frame, however, the Kings quickly started to generate some shots off the rush and while they didn’t score, they did outshoot the Rangers 13-6 in the period, as it remained scoreless after 20 minutes.
The Kings opened the scoring early in the second period, as Trevor Moore picked off a pass from K’Andre Miller then went down on a rush for a good chance that was stopped, but Phillip Danault followed up to bury the rebound. Then just a few minutes later, Moore threw a puck on net from the wing and Blake Lizotte went for the rebound, kicking the puck to his stick and extending the lead to 2-0.
It was a really entertaining period and the Kings continued to create turnovers on the forecheck, outshooting the Rangers 18-9. That said, while Kings led in shots, Petersen had to make some excellent saves and it seemed like every shot on him was a good chance.
While the Kings did a good job limiting chances for the first half of the final frame, the Rangers really started to press around the midway point of the period. Mika Zibanejad got New York on the board with under nine minutes to go, tipping in a shot from Filip Chytil. Los Angeles managed to hold the Rangers off for a lot of the remainder of the frame and as New York started to press late, Adrian Kempe buried an empty net goal, securing a 3-1 win for the Kings.
This was another really strong game for the Kings. Los Angeles was hard on the forecheck throughout the night and aside from a few stretches, they were in control for the majority of the game. Once again, they dominated in shots and over the last three games, they’ve now outshot their opponents by a huge 128-63 margin.
Trevor Moore had a great performance, continuing his strong play as of late. He was everywhere on the ice and over the last 14 games, he now has four goals and 12 points.
Credit to Cal Petersen as well, who started his second game in a row. He lasted five periods without allowing a goal, between his shutout against the Detroit Red Wings and the first two periods of tonight’s win, and he had to be very good despite the low numbers of shots.
With the win, the Kings now sit eighth in the Western Conference in points percentage. The team’s final game of their homestand comes on Thursday against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
