The Los Angeles Kings came up short against the Seattle Kraken last night, falling 3-2 in overtime.
Sean Durzi was out of the lineup with a lower-body injury, so Jacob Moverare suited up for his first game with the Kings this year. Cal Petersen also got his eighth start of the season.
The Kraken opened the scoring early, with Jared McCann burying a rebound only about five minus into the game. The Kings really didn’t get a ton of offense going in the frame and managed only six shots, as they went to the intermission down one.
Los Angeles did outshoot Seattle in the second frame but the Kraken had some pretty great chances that resulted in near misses, along with some key saves from Cal Petersen. However, with only about a minute to go in the period, Phillip Danault got a shot off in front and while it was deflected, the puck popped right back onto his stick and he buried it, tying the game through 40 minutes.
In the third period, Trevor Moore ended up giving the Kings the lead off a shorthanded breakaway only 35 seconds into the period. However, the Kraken got even only 18 seconds later on the same power play, with Daniel Sprong taking a pass and beating Petersen five-hole. The teams exchanged some opportunities throughout the rest of the frame (though Seattle arguably had the bulk of the high-danger chances) but neither team could break the tie, sending the contest to overtime.
Seattle took the win in overtime though, with Jordan Eberle going down on a 2-on-1 and beating Petersen over the glove side about midway through the extra frame.
Following their undefeated homestand, the Kings didn’t see a ton of success over their four-game road trip. They went 1-2-1, picking up only three of a possible eight points. Considering all games were against Pacific Division opponents, it’s a bit of a disappointing result.
The Kings were still making some pretty rough defensive mistakes (without Durzi in the lineup). They only gave up 29 shots but also still a lot of avoidable chances.
Los Angeles also shuffled lines yesterday, switching around Kevin Fiala, Gabriel Vilardi and Jaret Anderson-Dolan. With the first line really not producing much at all recently, it’s not a huge surprise. Adrian Kempe has two points in his last 10 games, while Gabriel Vilardi has gone pointless in the last six games and Anze Kopitar has a single goal over the last six games.
The Kings will be back in action on Tuesday, when they face the New York Rangers.
