The Los Angeles Kings fell 4-1 to the Vancouver Canucks tonight, coming off a win over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday.
Against the Oilers, Los Angeles opened the scoring early, with Trevor Moore one-timing a shot past Stuart Skinner under five minutes into the game. The Kings ended up putting together a strong period, outshooting Edmonton 13-6 and taking the lead to intermission.
The Oilers responded in the second period though, as Blake Lizotte put a dangerous pass up the middle of the Kings’ zone and it was picked off, as Zach Hyman went to the backhand to beat Cal Petersen. However, Los Angeles still put together another solid frame overall and with under three minutes left in the period, Viktor Arvidsson found Moore with a nice cross-crease pass just as a power play expired and Moore made no mistake, scoring his second goal of the game to put the Kings back ahead through 40 minutes.
Edmonton did have some chances in the third period but for the most part, the Kings did a good job shutting down the Oilers’ offense. Then with under a minute to go, Moore completed the hat trick, burying an empty netter to secure a 3-1 win for the Kings.
Against Vancouver tonight, we saw a pretty slow first period, with the Canucks outshooting Los Angeles 7-4. Each team had a power play opportunity but neither convert and after a period that didn’t involve much action, the game remained scoreless at intermission.
The Kings did come out really strong to start the second period with some good chances, but Elias Pettersson opened the scoring five minutes into the frame, taking a pass on a rush and beating Jonathan Quick five-hole. Then about five minutes after that, the Canucks capitalized on a power play, as J.T. Miller found Brock Boeser for a tap-in in front. The Kings did respond before the end of the frame, as Sean Walker’s point shot went in off Blake Lizotte. However, only about a minute later, Andrei Kuzmenko found Pettersson with a great cross-zone pass and Pettersson scored on the open net to re-extend the lead.
The Kings were flying to start the third period but only five minutes into the frame, the Canucks went down on an odd-man rush and Brock Boeser was there to bury a rebound, resulting in a 4-1 lead. Los Angeles ended up outshooting Vancouver 16-9 in the frame, but couldn't pull any closer.
In the win over Edmonton, the Kings put together a really strong defensive effort, which was important to see following the loss to Calgary. They really limited the Oilers’ offense, holding Edmonton to only 23 shots and put together a well-rounded effort.
In tonight’s loss to Vancouver, the Kings still limited the Canucks in terms of shots, but they did give up more quality chances. While there were some mistakes with being caught up ice or not able to get the puck out of their zone though, the effort was still there in tonight’s loss.
The Kings still outshot Vancouver 38-25 and had their chances. Thatcher Demko played really well but the Kings may have deserved a better fate.
Regardless, they’re now 1-2-0 on their road trip overall. The Kings will wrap up the road trip tomorrow, when they face the Seattle Kraken.
