The Los Angeles Kings have signed forward Adrian Kempe to a four-year contract extension, which carries a $5.5 million cap hit.
The deal was originally reported on Friday but was officially announced by the team today.
Kempe will turn 26 years old in September and is coming off a career year, in which he scored 35 goals and 54 points in 78 games. The contract will include a 10-team no-trade list in the final two years of the deal.
I’ll release a longer article looking at the contract but for a quick thought, I think the deal is alright but not excellent. Kempe had a breakout year and the term makes sense but the sample size of high-end production is small for that high of a cap hit on just a four-year deal. I would’ve expected the cap hit to be a bit lower with that term but still, if Kempe can keep up his production, he can certainly bring more than $5.5 million worth of value.
