The Los Angeles Kings dropped both games of their home and home against the San Jose Sharks this week, before defeating the Florida Panthers in overtime.

KINGS FALL TO SHARKS IN OVERTIME ON THURSDAY

The Kings went down early on Thursday, as Brent Burns put a shot through traffic and in on a power play. Los Angeles responded though, with Phillip Danault tapping in a loose puck and then only eight seconds later, Andreas Athanasiou entered San Jose’s zone and ripped a shot past Zach Sawchenko, to quickly make it 2-1 Kings.

Trevor Moore then added to Los Angeles’ lead in the second period, scoring a shorthanded goal to make it 3-1. San Jose did bring it back to a one-goal game on the same power play though, with Nick Bonino cashing in on a rebound that Jonathan Quick couldn’t handle.

San Jose then evened the game early in the third period, with Alexander Barabanov tipping in Erik Karlsson’s shot. Neither team broke the tie in regulation after that, and the game went to overtime. In the extra frame, Tomas Hertl outwaited the Kings’ players, wrapping the puck around and into the empty net, winning it for San Jose.

KINGS LOSE 5-0 TO SHARKS ON SATURDAY

San Jose struck first on a power play, as a puck came out front to Timo Meier and he ripped it past a screened Cal Petersen. The Sharks weren’t done there, with Matt Nieto burying a puck off a turnover from Jordan Spence. Then before the end of the frame, Sean Durzi gave the puck away and Jonathan Dahlen capitalized, sliding a puck through Cal Petersen to make it a 3-0 game after 20 minutes.

The Sharks then extended their lead in the second period, as Tomas Hertl backhanded in a loose puck. While that was it for the frame, Hertl struck again in the final period as well, securing a 5-0 Sharks win.

KINGS BEAT PANTHERS IN SHOOTOUT ON SUNDAY

Despite the Kings being outplayed through a lot of the first half of the frame, they still managed to strike first, with Rasmus Kupari backhanding a shot through Spencer Knight. Florida did outshoot Los Angeles by an 11-6 margin but the Kings escaped the frame up by one.

The Panthers rebounded in the second period though, as Eetu Luostarinen tied the game only a minute into the frame. Then only about three minutes later, Brandon Montour buried a rebound to give Florida the lead, which the Panthers carried into the intermission.

The Kings outplayed Florida in the third period, outshooting the Panthers 12-6. Just when it looked like they wouldn't be able to claw back though, Martin Frk ripped in a slapshot, sending the game to overtime.

After overtime didn’t solve anything, the teams went to a shootout, and in the fifth round, Trevor Moore scored to put the pressure on Florida. However, Jonathan Quick stopped Anthony Duclair, getting the win for Los Angeles.

Despite the disappointing back-to-back losses, it’s key that the Kings were able to bounce back from the 5-0 defeat and pick up a win against a really good team in the Panthers in the second half of a back-to-back.

It’s also impressive the Kings were able to pick up a win against Florida with so many key players out of their lineup due to injuries. While their lineup may be depleted, they can’t afford to drop games at this point, as they fight for positioning within the Pacific Division and the Western Conference.

The Kings’ next game comes tomorrow against the Colorado Avalanche.
