The San Jose Sharks fell 7-1 to the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight, marking their second loss in a row and fourth loss in their last five games.
The Sharks entered the night following a 3-2 loss against the Seattle Kraken on Thursday. The Sharks had scored early against the Kraken, with Tomas Hertl burying a puck a minute into the game. However, Carson Soucy struck twice for Seattle in the second period, despite the Kraken only managing six shots in the frame. Calle Jarnkrok extended the Kraken’s lead in the third period and despite Seattle getting into a ton of penalty trouble – taking five minor penalties in the frame – the Sharks were only able to get one goal back from Hertl and ended up falling 3-2.
Tonight, Ross Colton opened the scoring early in the first period, as his shot deflected in off Marc-Edouard Vlasic’s stick. Then later, Steven Stamkos fired a perfect wrist shot past James Reimer, who was likely screened. The Lightning weren’t done there, as Mathieu Joseph went to the net to bury a rebound, putting Tampa Bay up 3-0 only about halfway through the frame. The disastrous start continued minutes later, as a rebound popped out to Corey Perry, who made it 4-0 Lightning.
That was it for Reimer’s night, as Adin Hill entered the game. The Sharks did get one back before the end of the frame, as Timo Meier tipped in a shot from Jaycob Megna but it remained 4-1 after 20 minutes.
Brayden Point made it 5-1 off a nice pass from Nikita Kucherov in the second period and while it looked like Timo Meier had got one back later, it was reviewed and deemed he kicked in the puck. The Sharks did outshoot Tampa Bay 10-6 but couldn’t convert and the period ended at 5-1.
Tampa Bay extended their lead after several chances on a power play in the third period, as Alex Killorn tipped in a shot from Victor Hedman. Then just 33 seconds after that, Colton buried a loose puck in front, after nobody picked him up, and the Lightning cruised to a 7-1 win.
This was another game with rough start for the Sharks – something which they’ve had their fair share of this season. If you go down four goals about 10 minutes into the game, good luck catching up, no matter who your opponent is.
With the losses, the Sharks fall to 21-19-2 this season, sitting sixth in the Pacific Division and 12th in the Western Conference in points percentage. They’re starting to fall behind in the playoff race and face a tough four-game road trip against some strong Eastern Conference opponents.
The Sharks return to action on Wednesday, when they face the Washington Capitals.
