Mrazek (likely) returning, Geekie makes case to stay with Hurricanes

It looks as though Petr Mrazek will be returning to the crease, with the Carolina Hurricanes reassigning Alex Nedeljkovic to Charlotte today.

Nedeljkovic struggled in his first two starts but was solid in yesterday’s win in Pittsburgh. Through his stint with the Hurricanes, it didn’t look like he was quite NHL-ready just yet but between his start against the Penguins and his relief effort in Montreal, he showed signs that he could be an NHL regular at some point down the road.

Meanwhile, Morgan Geekie kicked off his NHL career in excellent fashion yesterday, scoring twice and adding an assist in the win.

He didn’t look out of place whatsoever in his first game to the point where you’d think he’s been a regular in the league for years. He was comfortable carrying the puck and didn’t throw it away when under pressure, which is something often seen from players in their first stretch of games. He has great puck control and we saw that he has no problem heading right to the front of the net, which led to his two goals.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Geekie was able to contribute. Though his numbers in Charlotte have been good, they haven’t been great– but that changes if you look at the last two-ish months. In his last 24 AHL games, Geekie has been excellent, scoring 15 goals and 25 points.

It’s only one game but the point is Geekie was already driving the play at times and it seems as though he could be a great fit on the team, potentially replacing Lucas Wallmark as a bottom-six center. If yesterday was a sign of things to come, Geekie certainly looks ready to start his NHL career and if he doesn’t stay up with Carolina, it won’t be long before he’s back.
