Every article, I try to include a poll question for readers to vote on, then review the results from the week’s polls every weekend. I’m late on this, but here are last week’s poll results and my thoughts on how they turned out.
QUESTION: What’s your long-term projection for Alex Nedeljkovic’s future?
(Votes: 50)
Doesn’t make/stay in the NHL: 40%
NHL Backup: 36%
NHL Starter: 12%
NHL Fringe Starter: 12%
I honestly don’t know where I stand here. I want to think Nedeljkovic can be a starter in the NHL, especially seeing what he did last season with Charlotte. That said, like 76 per cent of readers voted, I have my doubts. I think next season will be massive for Nedeljkovic and either he gets a spot with the Hurricanes after that or his chances of becoming an NHL starter are slim.
QUESTION: Was giving up a first-round pick for Brady Skjei the right move?
(Votes: 239)
No: 49%
Yes: 26%
It’s too early to tell: 25%
I lean towards “No” on this one but I think it may also be too early to tell. If the Hurricanes somehow manage to keep Skjei and the better player of Bean/Fleury through the expansion draft, it’s not all that bad in my opinion. However, I think that’s pretty unlikely and I’m worried that the Hurricanes may have thrown away a first-round pick in one of the deepest drafts in a couple decades for a year and a half of Brady Skjei.
QUESTION: Are you happy with Carolina’s management of their draft picks over the last few years?
(Votes: 40)
Yes: 95%
No: 5%
The Hurricanes have been successful with asset management (like I’ve discussed) and accumulating draft picks has been a huge part of that. Carolina hasn’t just acquired draft picks but more importantly, they’ve known what to do with them once they’ve got them. They have a steady flow of young prospects at different points in their development and this season, the Hurricanes saw the benefits of this strategy.
