***NOTE: Apologies for the lack of content recently. I’ve been caught up covering New York (and formerly, Carolina) in the playoffs but going forward, there should be more consistent articles.***
This article will be another in my series of player profiles, where I’ll look at each player on the Anaheim Ducks and assess how their season went. This piece will focus on Carter Rowney.
Rowney produced at around the same rate as last season, scoring eight goals and 19 points in 71 games. He was averaging just 10:22 per game at even strength, though he was a major part of Anaheim’s penalty kill, where he averaged 2:22 per game, which was more than any other forward on the Ducks who finished the season with the team.
His underlying numbers weren’t great (and generally, neither were those of the entire fourth line), with Rowney managing a corsi for percentage of 41.6 per cent and an expected goals for percentage of 41.3 per cent (according to NaturalStatTrick.com), both of which were the worst of any forward still with the team (more than 15 games played). However, it’s important to note with those stats that the fourth line was used in a defensive role and Rowney had an offensive zone start percentage of just 37.2 per cent. So realistically, the numbers aren’t as poor as they may seem.
Overall, Rowney is a good fit on the fourth line, who also adds physicality and is able to produce at a pretty decent rate considering his role. It’s also a bonus that, if called upon, he could play down the middle. He’s under contract for another year and we can expect him to be back on the fourth line next season. That said, Anaheim does have prospects to work into the lineup and it’ll be interested to see if Rowney is affected by that.

Here’s today’s poll question (results and discussion will be posted in a future article):
Were you happy with Carter Rowney's performance this season?
