This article will be another in my series of player profiles, where I’ll look at each player on the San Jose Sharks and assess how their season went. This piece will focus on Marcus Sorensen.
Sorensen’s production dropped quite a bit this year, with him scoring just seven goals and 18 points in 66 games, a pace of nine goals and 22 points per 82 games, down from a pace of 17 goals and 31 points last season. While I want to be optimistic about his chances of bouncing back to his 2018-19 production levels next season, it seems to be unlikely.
In 2018-19, Sorensen had a ridiculous shooting percentage of 17 per cent, on route to his 17 goals. He’s simply not going to be able to replicate that and realistically, his shooting percentage of nine per cent this season, while a bit low, is a lot closer to the number we can expect to see from him going forward. His drop in production also came despite the fact that his ice time increased by nearly a minute per game this season.
Sorensen’s advanced stats also weren’t great, managing a corsi for percentage of just 48.8 per cent, though he did have a very low offensive zone start percentage. His expected goals for percentage was also very low, at just 46.2 per cent (according to NaturalStatTrick.com).
He still has a year remaining on his contract but considering he’s already 28 years old, I’d say he’s unlikely to be part of the team’s long-term plan. The Sharks need to get younger and improve the bottom-six and unfortunately, Sorensen probably isn’t going to help with that.
