Reviewing the season (so far): Ryan Dzingel

This piece will be another in my series of player profiles, where I’ll give some thoughts on the performance of a member of the Carolina Hurricanes this season. This article will focus on Ryan Dzingel.

Dzingel was a free agency signing in the summer that the Hurricanes got for a surprisingly reasonable price. Dzingel had an impressive 2019 with the Hurricanes but was in a huge slump by the time the season was postponed. He had no goals and just three points in his last 20 games and saw his ice time and role drastically reduced as a result.

By the time the season was put on pause, Dzingel was on pace for just 10 goals, a drastic step down from the last two seasons where he hit the 20-goal mark. Carolina had some serious problems in terms of secondary scoring in the back half of the season and Dzingel was part of the issue. A problem with Dzingel is that he’s streaky. He can be a key piece for a stretch of games but then he’ll fall into the background and become invisible pretty quickly.

I think it’s a fair expectation to hope that Dzingel can get back to how he was performing at the start of the season and put up around 40-45 points next year. Having said that, I think the Hurricanes got what they should have expected out of Dzingel. He's not someone who will produce what he did with Ottawa last year but instead, can be a solid middle-six forward who's able to chip in some secondary scoring.

For the price the Hurricanes got him at, especially considering they were able to do a short-term deal, I don’t think there can be a ton of complaints about Dzingel’s year overall. Despite a poor back half, I’d expect him to be a contributing member of the forward group next season.
