This piece will be another in my series of player profiles, where I’ll give some thoughts on the performance of a member of the Carolina Hurricanes this season. This article will focus on Teuvo Teravainen.
Teravainen had another great year for the Hurricanes. He was getting way more shots through this year, with an average of 57.4 per cent of his shot attempts hitting the net, which ranked first amongst Hurricanes forwards. It was a large step up from the last two seasons, where only 52.5 per cent of his shots were on net.
Another positive is that Teravainen managed a pace of 18 goals and 76 points per 82 games, despite shooting at just 8.2 per cent. If he had even matched his shooting percentage of 10.5 per cent since joining the Hurricanes, which is lower than both his 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons, he would’ve been on pace for a 23-goal year (per 82 games). He also averaged more time on the power play than any other forward on the team and the fact that he’s a star player who’s still able to effectively kill penalties is a huge bonus.
While Teravainen certainly had a high ceiling when he was acquired from Chicago, I’m not sure many expected him to become the star he is today with the Hurricanes. It seems as though he’ll pretty consistently be able to hit the 70-point mark moving forward and as the top-line plays more and gets more comfortable with one another, they may be able to continue to increase their production as a unit.
Here's today's poll question (results and discussion will be posted on Saturday):
Would you prefer to have Svechnikov/Aho/Teravainen together long-term or move one off the line to spread out scoring?
