Rocky Thompson will not be back as a member of the San Jose Sharks’ coaching staff next season, as he will not be able to get vaccinated for COVID-19.
As an associate coach, Thompson would have needed to be vaccinated, as he’d be having interactions with players within 12 feet. However, due to an unspecified medical condition, Thompson is unable to be vaccinated.
"Due to a medical exemption that prevents me from taking the COVID-19 vaccine, under the new League protocols, I am not permitted to fulfill my duties on the Sharks coaching staff at this time," said Thompson in a statement. "I will have no further comment on this matter."
Last year was Thompson’s first year as a member of San Jose’s coaching staff. The Sharks’ statement says the team will name a replacement in the near future.
