A major topic of the NHL offseason was the saga surrounding forward Jack Eichel and where he would be dealt. The Anaheim Ducks were one of the teams rumoured to be engaging in trade talks with the Buffalo Sabres and recently, Elliotte Friedman shared what he believed the ask was from the Sabres, on the 32 Thoughts Podcast.

According to Friedman, the Sabres wanted forward Trevor Zegras, defenseman Jamie Drysdale and two first-round picks in return. He also noted that he didn’t think a deal was ever close.

While this doesn’t mean much now, it’s interesting to learn what the Sabres wanted from the Ducks (as well as what they got from the Vegas Golden Knights). Obviously, the actual return wasn’t close to what this value would’ve been and Buffalo's price came down a level or two from this ask, but this return was never going to happen from the Ducks’ perspective.

Zegras, who’s 20 years old, has 25 points in 30 games, a pace of 68 points per 82 games. Drysdale, on the other hand, has already become an extremely important part of the team’s defense group at just 19 years old and is even on pace for 36 points per 82 himself.

While you have to applaud the effort from Kevyn Adams and the Buffalo Sabres to try and get the best package possible, I think we can agree the Ducks made the right call in not following through on this.
