The Carolina Hurricanes currently lead the NHL in points percentage, with a key reason for this being their offense.
One important member of the forward group who wasn’t even necessarily a lock to be on the team this year is Seth Jarvis. Selected 13th overall by the Hurricanes in 2020, Jarvis still had another year of CHL eligibility remaining and Carolina had the ability to allow his entry-level contract to slide once again.
However, Jarvis capitalized on his opportunity in the NHL and has earned his spot. He already has an impressive five goals and 14 points in 22 games, a pace of 19 goals and 52 points per 82 games.
Jarvis already has quite a well-rounded game, which gives him the versatility to move up and down the lineup as needed. He certainly has the speed and offensive talent to play in the top-six but he’s also quite strong defensively and can be hard on the forecheck. He’s earned time on the power play as well and it’s likely we see him continuing to grow his role going forward.
The Hurricanes can likely factor Jarvis in as a long-term, top-six forward and while that’s something that most people probably could’ve guessed well before he arrived on the scene with Carolina, it’s certainly become apparent in his time in the NHL. Given the numbers he’s been able to put up while playing down the lineup at times, it’s highly possible we see a huge increase in production from Jarvis in the near future, especially when he’s consistently playing alongside some of the Hurricanes’ top forwards.
For now though, Jarvis continues to take on any role as needed and has already become a key member of Carolina’s forward group. If he keeps up his play, he'll only push closer towards Calder Trophy consideration as well. Considering there was a possibility that we’d need to wait another year or perhaps even more before seeing Jarvis with a permanent NHL role though, he’s exceeding all expectations so far this season.
