The Carolina Hurricanes rallied back to beat the Chicago Blackhawks last night by a score of 4-3, improving to a 9-0 record.
Despite giving up an early goal, the Hurricanes were the better team in the first period, though the game was only tied after 20 minutes. The Blackhawks did have a much better start to the second period and went up 3-1, off a nice tip by Patrick Kane, followed by a terrible giveaway by Brady Skjei, resulting in DeBrincat’s second goal of the night. In the back half of the period, however, the Hurricanes started to climb back, as Seth Jarvis used his speed to get in alone on a breakaway for his first NHL goal.
Despite only managing seven shots in the third period, the Hurricanes made them count. First, Jesper Fast buried a puck in front off a pass from Andrei Svechnikov to tie the game just 17 seconds into the frame. Then three minutes later, Martin Necas snuck a puck through Marc-Andre Fleury, to put the Hurricanes ahead for the first time.
However, once again, the Hurricanes took too many penalties against the Blackhawks. Last time it was eight penalties and this time it was five, which allowed Chicago to build momentum late in the game. However, the penalty kill and Frederik Andersen were great, and the Hurricanes hung on for the win.
It was certainly good to see Carolina battle back after going down by two goals partway through the game. While they really let the Blackhawks back in the game in the last 10 minutes, they got the win, which is all that matters.
Jarvis getting his first NHL goal was great too. He has two points in two games and has been effective, despite his limited role.
The Hurricanes will now face some tougher competition as they try to remain undefeated, as they’re scheduled to take on both the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning on the road.
