The San Jose Sharks didn’t make a big splash in free agency today, but they did end up completing a fairly major trade.

The Sharks added forward Anthony Duclair from the Florida Panthers, in exchange for forward Steven Lorentz and a 2025 fifth-round pick.

Duclair is turning 28 years old in August, and has one year remaining on his contract, which carries a $3M cap hit. He got into just 20 games with Florida this season following an Achilles injury, managing nine points. However, he was able to score at a pace of more than 60 points per 82 during his two previous seasons with the Panthers.

Lorentz, on the other hand, also has one year remaining on his deal at a $1.05M cap hit. While he plays with a lot of intensity in his game and is a solid depth forward, he can’t provide the same impact as Duclair at his best. Lorentz is 27 years old and scored 10 goals and 19 points in 80 games with the Sharks this season.

This is a really solid deal for the Sharks, bringing in a legitimate top-six winger at a very low cost. With only a year left on his deal as well, there’s the potential for the Sharks to either re-sign him long-term or flip him before the trade deadline for assets.

In other news, the Sharks also signed six players on the first day of free agency.

Mackenzie Blackwood was the most notable signing, with the Sharks signing him to a two-year contract worth $2.35 million per year. Blackwood notably didn’t receive a qualifying offer after being acquired form the New Jersey Devils, before signing his deal. He’ll be looking to rebound from a season where he played just 22 games, posting an .893 save percentage .

The Sharks certainly have their range for what they’re looking to pay a goalie, with each of Adin Hill, Kaapo Kahkonen, James Reimer and now Blackwood receiving two-year deals right around $2.25M in recent years.

San Jose also re-signed forward Fabian Zetterlund to a two-year contract, which carries a $1.45 million cap hit. Zetterlund is 23 years old and was acquired from the Devils as part of the Timo Meier trade. He managed just three assists in 22 games with San Jose after the trade.

Kyle Burroughs also joined the Sharks on a three-year deal at a $1.1 million cap hit. Burroughs is turning 28 years old this month and played 48 games with the Vancouver Canucks this season, managing five points.

The team’s other signings were Givani Smith, Ryan Carpenter and Scott Sabourin.
