The San Jose Sharks capped off their four-game road trip with a win yesterday, defeating the Vegas Golden Knights 5-2.
Nick Cicek entered the Sharks’ lineup, with Radim Simek having been placed on injured reserve. James Reimer also got his 12th start of the season.
The Sharks were outplayed in the opening frame, being outshot 11-6 by Vegas. That said, it looked like they’d be able to get out of the period with the game tied until Nick Cicek committed a turnover with little time remaining and Vegas capitalized, as Jack Eichel one-timed a shot past James Reimer, putting the Golden Knights ahead with only a few seconds left in the period.
San Jose pulled back even about eight minutes into the second period though, as Erik Karlsson’s point shot hit Alec Martinez and dropped right to Luke Kunin, who beat Logan Thompson. However, Vegas did respond before the end of the frame on a rush, as Jonathan Marchessault caught Reimer cheating to the other side of the net and beat him with a great shot, putting the Golden Knights back ahead by one.
The Sharks tied the game once again early in the third period though, with Matt Nieto taking a pass in-close and then going to the backhand to beat Thompson. San Jose put together a strong frame after that, outshooting the Golden Knights 11-6. Then after killing some penalties throughout the period, San Jose had a power play chance of their own late in the frame and capitalized, with Logan Couture finding Timo Meier, who put the Sharks ahead with under three minutes left. The Sharks then added two empty netters after that, coming away with a 5-2 win.
San Jose put together a strong back 40 minutes to get the win, outshooting the Golden Knights 23-15 between the second and third periods.
The Sharks’ record after the first five games of the season is now 6-4-3 and with the victory, San Jose comes away from their four-game road trip with an impressive six out of eight possible points. Two of the biggest changes have been the Sharks’ top forwards playing like top forwards, and a much more steady defensive game all-around.
Timo Meier and Logan Couture both scored in the win, while Tomas Hertl and Alexander Barabanov each had assists. Defensively, while the Sharks did still give up some pretty clear odd-man rush chances, they also limited Vegas to only 26 shots and put together a solid outing.
Their next game will come tomorrow, when they face the Detroit Red Wings.
