The San Jose Sharks claimed forward Ryan Dzingel off waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs yesterday, before placing forward Lane Pederson on waivers.
Dzingel had only been acquired by the Leafs on Friday, in a trade with the Arizona Coyotes. The forward is 29 years old and scored four goals and seven points in 26 games with Arizona this season, a pace of 13 goals and 22 points per 82 games. He’s on a one-year contract, which carries a $1.1 million cap hit.
Pederson, on the other hand, is 24 years old and had two assists in 26 games with the Sharks this year. He was acquired from Arizona in an offseason trade.
While Dzingel was a pretty well-producing middle-six forward as recently as two or three years ago, his production has fallen off over the last couple years. He’s managed just 20 points over 66 games between this year and the 2020-21 season combined.
I’m a fan of the Sharks claiming Dzingel, considering if his production could recover even slightly, he could end up being a welcome addition to the Sharks’ forward group. That said, it’s a case of poor asset management with Pederson, given the Sharks valued him at a fourth-round pick just this offseason and are now willing to waive him. It’s a minor frustration, but still notable.
Regardless, Dzingel is a nice pickup for the Sharks.
