The San Jose Sharks fell 5-2 to the Minnesota Wild at home last night.
Kevin Fiala gave the Wild an early lead, putting in a rebound off Jon Merrill’s point shot. The Wild got the better chances but the shots stayed at 10-9 (MIN) after the period and the Sharks went into the intermission down 1-0.
The Wild extended their lead on a power play in the second period, as Mats Zuccarello put a great pass to Joel Eriksson Ek, who tipped it past Adin Hill. Then later in the frame, Minnesota scored on yet another man advantage, with Jordan Greenway beating Hill with a nice shot to put the Wild up 3-0 after 40 minutes.
The Sharks came out strong in the third period, aiming to mount a comeback. First, Jonathan Dahlen tipped in a shot from Erik Karlsson, to get San Jose on the board. They kept pressing after that and later in the period, Tomas Hertl managed to put in a rebound, off Dahlen’s initial shot.
Despite outshooting the Wild 19-9 in the final frame though, the Sharks’ comeback stopped there, as the Wild added two empty net goals to secure the win.
The Sharks had a great effort in the third period but didn’t really generate a ton of chances through the first 40 minutes. The Wild managed to capitalize on two of their three power play opportunities and it ended up making the difference.
San Jose still has five games remaining in their homestand, having gone 1-1 so far and their next game will come against the Dallas Stars tomorrow night.
