The San Jose Sharks wrapped up their five-game road trip last night, falling 6-4 to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
It was their second loss in a row, following three straight wins to start the road trip against the Chicago Blackhawks, New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders.
Their losses came in very ways, with a 1-0 loss to the Rangers on Friday, compared to a 10-goal game against the Blue Jackets. Despite the losses, the Sharks still hold a 13-11-1 record and remain in a competitive spot within the Pacific Division.
A key was that the Sharks continued to get strong goaltending on the road trip, as Adin Hill and James Reimer combined for a .938 save percentage across the five games. They allowed just nine goals in that time and just four goals in the first four games of the trip.
Timo Meier has continued his excellent play, with five goals and 11 points in his last seven games, while Brent Burns finally got back on the scoreboard last night, after going 11 games in a row without a point.
The Sharks are still missing legitimate top-six forwards and while Meier and Logan Couture have been producing well, even Tomas Hertl has been relatively underwhelming offensively. They do have some decent secondary scoring with the likes of Rudolfs Balcers, Alexander Barabanov and Jonathan Dahlen all chipping in, but they don’t have the consistent offense they need.
Erik Karlsson has continued his bounce-back year though, which has been hugely important for the team’s early success. His six goals and 14 points are already approaching his numbers from last year.
The Sharks begin a seven-game homestand against the Calgary Flames tomorrow night. The stretch of games will be a great chance to pick up some points, which includes a game against the Seattle Kraken and two games against the Vancouver Canucks.
