The San Jose Sharks fell 4-1 to the Vegas Golden Knights last night, marking their sixth loss in a row.

The Sharks were forced to kill a double minor for high-sticking pretty early on, but actually managed to do so and even got some decent shorthanded chances as well. However, Vegas still opened the scoring halfway through the frame, as Keegan Kolesar’s long-range shot got through James Reimer. Then just a few minutes after that, Jack Eichel picked up his first goal as a member of the Golden Knights off a pass from Chandler Stephenson. Despite the Sharks managing some good chances off the rush in the frame, they were down 2-0 after 20 minutes.

Vegas extended their lead early in the second period, as Max Pacioretty somehow beat Reimer from a terrible spot. The Sharks fired 14 shots on goal in the frame but Logan Thompson – making only his second NHL start – was solid, and it remained 3-0.

San Jose did get on the board in the third period, as Andrew Cogliano created a turnover on the forecheck and got the puck to Nick Bonino, who beat Thompson. Despite the Sharks throwing another 14 shots on goal in the period though, they couldn't capitalize and Vegas added an empty net goal, securing a 4-1 win.

The Sharks actually did generate a lot of good chances against Vegas, putting 36 shots on net, but weren’t able to finish.

James Reimer played decent overall but each of the goals he allowed, especially the first and third, were certainly stoppable. The Sharks lost the goaltending battle and it played a big factor in the loss.

With the loss, the Sharks are now down to .500, at just a 22-22-5 record. They’re seventh in the Pacific Division and are now well out of the playoff race.

San Jose’s next game comes on Tuesday against the Anaheim Ducks.
