The San Jose Sharks snapped their three game losing streak with a 4-2 win over the Arizona Coyotes tonight.
The Sharks opened the scoring only 20 seconds into the game, with Nick Bonino tipping in a shot from Andrew Cogliano to give San Jose an early lead. Despite the quick start, it was a pretty low-event first period and the Sharks took the lead into the intermission.
The second period was fairly even, with the teams each managing eight shots. Then late in the frame, Phil Kessel managed to tie the game off a pass from Lawson Crouse, making it 1-1 after 40 minutes.
It was a pretty entertaining final frame, with the teams combining for 25 shots. Most of the action came late in the period though, and Arizona pulled ahead with only five minutes to go, as Lawson Crouse whiffed on a deflection but the puck still trickled past Reimer. Just 22 seconds later, however, Timo Meier ripped a shot past Karel Vejmelka to tie the game. Then only 44 seconds after that, Noah Gregor managed to throw off Vejmelka with some moves behind the net, then wrapped the puck around to get the Sharks the lead once again. Later with under a minute remaining, Rudolfs Balcers then iced it for the Sharks, taking the puck off Shayne Gostisbehere and scoring an empty net goal.
It was a nice comeback for the Sharks late, snapping their losing streak against a team they should really beat.
However, the focus also has to be on the trade deadline at this point, with only about 16 hours until the deadline. With Tomas Hertl signed, the Sharks don’t have a significant trade chip but they do have some other potential pieces, so we’ll see if anything gets done.
San Jose’s next game comes on Tuesday against the Calgary Flames.
