The San Jose Sharks are back in action at home against the Anaheim Ducks tonight, following a two-game Alberta road trip this week.

On Tuesday, the Sharks picked up a 4-3 win over the Pacific Division-leading Calgary Flames. They battled back from an early two-goal deficit and put together a strong effort, putting 38 shots on Jacob Markstrom.

On Thursday, however, San Jose fell 5-2 to the Edmonton Oilers. The Sharks fell behind midway through the game and while they stayed in it, they weren’t able to recover.

The game against Edmonton also marked Kaapo Kahkonen’s first start with the Sharks, after being acquired from the Minnesota Wild at the trade deadline. He made 36 saves on 40 shots in the loss.

It’ll be interesting to see how San Jose’s situation in net plays out. Kahkonen and Hill are likely the two netminders the Sharks are hoping to go with next season, given their age. That said, James Reimer has been one of the team’s best players this season and while he can be inconsistent from year to year, he’s certainly a valuable asset.

The Sharks sit 12th in the West in points percentage and while they aren’t getting near the postseason, it’s still interesting to see how the team looks after the deadline moves. They still have 18 games remaining this season and due to the injuries, some players are getting opportunities they otherwise wouldn’t have.

Following the game against the Kings tonight, the Sharks will have a break until back-to-back road games against the Arizona Coyotes and Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday and Thursday.
