The San Jose Sharks have signed forward Evgeny Svechnikov to a one-year contract, which carries a $750,000 cap hit.
Svechnikov is 25 years old and was originally selected 19th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in 2015. The forward has played 113 career NHL games and this past season, he scored seven goals and 19 points in 72 games with the Winnipeg Jets. He’s also the brother of Carolina Hurricanes’ star forward Andrei Svechnikov.
It’s an interesting signing for the Sharks to add more forward depth and also comes only about a week after the Sharks also re-signed depth forward Jonah Gadjovich. However, even without the likes of William Eklund and Thomas Bordeleau potentially making the jump to the NHL, the Sharks already have more forwards than available spots. As a result, there’s certainly a decent chance Svechnikov makes the Sharks' roster but ends up as a spare forward, or possibly doesn't even make the cut altogether.
