After a quiet month for the San Jose Sharks, the team announced today that they’ve signed prospect Filip Bystedt to an entry-level contract.

Bystedt was the Sharks’ most recent first round pick, being selected 27th overall by the team in last year’s NHL Draft. The forward spent the year in Sweden’s top professional league, where he won the league’s rookie of the year honours after posting seven goals and 20 points in 45 games.

The forward’s deal carries a $950,000 cap hit, but it is eligible to slide if he doesn’t play at least 10 NHL games next season.

Bystedt is part of a group of forward prospects which could help lead the Sharks back to being a competitive team a few years down the road. With Bystedt, as well as the likes of William Eklund, Thomas Bordeleau, Danil Gushchin and others, along with likely selecting a forward with the fourth overall pick this year, the organization is quietly building a strong prospect pool of forwards.

Speaking of contracts: On a side note, over the last while, I’ve been working on a small project to project contract extensions for this year’s group of free agents. Any UFAs or RFAs with more than 10 NHL games played this year are getting a projection, with an article being released for the Top 50 free agents to give a more detailed breakdown of each projection.

Most of the players designated as a Top-50 Free Agent don’t have a projection released yet, and 2-3 will be posted each day throughout June, leading up to free agency on July 1. However, most UFAs and RFAs do have a projection already available.

For the Sharks, projections are out for James Reimer, Fabian Zetterlund, Noah Gregor, Jacob Peterson, Martin Kaut, Evgeny Svechnikov and Jonah Gadjovich.

The project can be found at:
