The San Jose Sharks announced yesterday that they’ve signed defenseman Nick Cicek to a two-year entry-level contract. The deal will carry a $835,000 cap hit and kicks in next season.
Cicek is 21 years old and is undrafted, however, he’s spent this season with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda. With the Barracuda, Cicek has managed five goals and 23 points in 48 games, leaving him second in points amongst the team’s defensemen.
Given his age and stats in just his first year of professional hockey, it’s a no-risk move to bet on the defender having NHL upside. Considering the Sharks’ lack of defensive depth as well, especially on the left side, Cicek should get a good shot with the organization in the coming years.
