The San Jose Sharks beat the Los Angeles Kings in both halves of their home and home, winning in Los Angeles on Thursday, then at home yesterday.
4-3 OVERTIME WIN ON THURSDAY
Brent Burns got the Sharks on the board early on Thursday, putting a shot through traffic on a power play that found its way in. The Kings did respond a few minutes later though, after Zach Sawchenko couldn’t handle a puck and Phillip Danault tapped in a rebound. Then only eight seconds later, Andreas Athanasiou walked in and snapped a shot past Sawchenko and the Sharks found themselves playing from behind, and remained down 2-1 at intermission.
Despite the Sharks controlling a lot of the second period, they gave up a shorthanded goal to Trevor Moore, making it a 3-1 game. The Sharks did respond on that same power play though, with Nick Bonino tapping in a loose puck off a rebound.
The Sharks then tied the game in the third period, with Alexander Barabanov tipping in a shot from Erik Karlsson. Neither team could break the tie after that in regulation but in overtime, Tomas Hertl scored on a wraparound to complete the comeback and secure a Sharks win.
5-0 WIN ON SATURDAY
The Sharks came out flying in the first period and took the lead on a power play midway through the frame, as Timo Meier put a shot through traffic from a good spot in front. Then under three minutes later, the Sharks’ forecheck created a turnover and Matt Nieto scored, putting San Jose up by two. Jonathan Dahlen then added to the Sharks’ lead with under a minute to go as well, as San Jose took a 3-0 lead into the intermission.
Tomas Hertl extended San Jose’s lead in the second period, knocking in a loose puck to make it 4-0. Then in the final frame, Hertl struck again, knocking in a loose puck with about five minutes to go, leading to a 5-0 Sharks win.
It was an impressive home and home set against the Kings, picking up all four points. San Jose’s power play was key as well, going 4-for-9 on their opportunities.
Erik Karlsson returned to the Sharks lineup on Thursday and immediately took on a huge role, playing nearly 26 minutes in the win. Adin Hill then made his return for the Sharks yesterday, stopping 29 shots for a shutout in his first game back.
Ryan Dzingel was also waived on Friday, then cleared yesterday. He’ll join the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda.
San Jose’s next game comes on Tuesday against the Florida Panthers.
