The San Jose Sharks made a massive trade today, sending defenseman Brent Burns to the Carolina Hurricanes.
In addition to Burns, the Sharks also moved forward Lane Pederson to the Hurricanes, in exchange for forward Steven Lorentz, prospect Eetu Makiniemi and a 2023 third-round pick.
The Sharks will also retain 34 per cent of Burns’ salary for the three remaining seasons on the deal, which makes for $2.72 million against the Sharks' cap in each season. Burns has been with the Sharks for the last 11 seasons, playing a huge role on the team’s blue line. He’s 37 years old and scored 10 goals and 54 points in 82 games this past season.
I’ll release an article going more in-depth on this trade soon but for now, it’s still pretty wild to see the Sharks actually move on from Burns. The Sharks didn’t get a huge return for the defender but they did clear some cap space and added a depth forward, a prospect and a decent pick in exchange. It’s a major development, possibly showing the team is finally gearing towards the future rather than the present.
San Jose also signed forward Oskar Lindblom to a two-year contract, which carries a $2.5 million cap hit.
Lindblom was bought out by the Flyers, after posting 12 goals and 26 points in 79 games this past season. He’ll be turning 26 years old next month and notably battled Ewing’s sarcoma, a form of bone cancer.
It’s a bit of a curious move for the Sharks to let go of Jonathan Dahlen and buy out Rudolfs Balcers and then sign Lindblom to a more expensive contract. That said, the forward is still fairly young and should get a good opportunity with the Sharks.
