The San Jose Sharks were active before today’s trade deadline, completing a few more deals.

The Sharks sent Nick Bonino to the Pittsburgh Penguins as part of a three-team trade, also involving the Montreal Canadiens. In the deal, they also sent Tony Sund and their own fifth-round pick in 2024 to the Canadiens, and acquired defenseman Arvid Henriksson from Montreal, along with a 2023 seventh-round pick and a conditional 2024 fifth-round pick from Pittsburgh.

The fifth-round pick from Pittsburgh will become a fourth-round pick if the Penguins reach the Eastern Conference Finals.

Bonino had scored 10 goals and 19 points in 59 games with the Sharks this season. While it’s a pretty underwhelming return (getting almost nothing back in terms of future assets), Bonino was going to be an unrestricted free agent anyways.

The Sharks also flipped Vladislav Namestnikov to the Winnipeg Jets, in exchange for a 2025 fourth-round pick. Namestnikov had just been acquired from the Tampa Bay Lightning.

It’s a move that was expected, but is still quite clever for the Sharks. While it essentially ended up costing them Mikey Eyssimont in the process, if you factor in that Eyssimont was claimed off waivers only two months ago, the Sharks essentially just added a fourth-round pick for nothing.

Lastly, San Jose dealt Scott Reedy to the Dallas Stars for Jacob Peterson, who was selected only 30 spots after Reedy in the 2017 NHL Draft.

Reedy has spent the season in the AHL, but did get into 35 games with the Sharks last season. Peterson was in a similar situation with Dallas, where he did play 65 games with the Stars last season but ended up back in the AHL this year.

I liked Reedy, and did think there was a chance he could end up being a solid depth forward for the Sharks. At the same time, Peterson carries more offensive upside, so as a 1-for-1 trade, this looks alright for San Jose.

Notably though, the Sharks held onto goaltender James Reimer, who’s also a pending unrestricted free agent. While Reimer’s stats this season probably weren’t going to warrant anywhere near as large of a return as if he was dealt in the offseason, it still seems like a missed opportunity.

According to San Jose Hockey Now’s Sheng Peng, even Reimer seemed disappointed to not be traded to a contending team.

But that’s it for the Sharks in terms of trades for now. Erik Karlsson remains with the team, Timo Meier fetched a big package (which I’ll have an analysis for posted tomorrow), and there weren’t any other huge surprises.
