Anaheim Ducks fans who have been tuning in for this year’s World Juniors tournament have been in for a treat. The Ducks have six prospects representing their respective countries and all of their teams have qualified for the quarterfinals. The highlight of the tournament for Ducks fans so far, however, has to be the performance of 2019 ninth-overall pick, Trevor Zegras.
His nine points in five games last year, which led Team USA, seemed as though it would be a tough mark to beat. This year, however, Zegras has obliterated those numbers, with six goals and 13 points in just four round robin games. Those stats have him leading the entire tournament in points and also tied for the lead in goals.
Zegras has, as expected, been feeding teammates with great passes and showing off his agility with the puck, dodging opponents in the offensive zone. Another area of his game that’s been on display, however, has been his shot. Zegras has scored a couple goals with a pinpoint-accurate wrist shot that’s been used anywhere from the top of the circle to about 10 feet away from the net.
He’s such a threat because when he enters the offensive zone with the puck, he has the ability to do just about whatever he wants with it. He can skate with it and keep control extremely well, get it to a teammate in a high-danger zone or instead, get a great shot on net.
You never want to jump the gun when projecting a prospect but it’s pretty difficult to picture him as anything other than a top-six NHL forward, at minimum. Realistically, Zegras has a good shot at becoming Anaheim’s future first-line center.
Team USA will be playing their quarterfinal game today against Slovakia and hopefully, we get to see him in a couple more games this tournament because he's been dominant to this point.
