The New York Islanders signed three veterans this week, while a forward that was on the roster last year signed with a new team. Here’s the weekly recap:
ISLANDERS AGREE TO DEALS WITH ANDY GREENE, MATT MARTIN AND CORY SCHNEIDER
We learned this week that the Islanders have re-signed Andy Greene and Matt Martin and also added goaltender Cory Schneider. No details were released on the contracts.
DERICK BRASSARD SIGNS WITH COYOTES
Derick Brassard will not be returning to the New York Islanders for the coming season. The forward signed a one-year deal worth $1 million with the Arizona Coyotes this week.
ISLANDERS WON’T INVITE JOSH HO-SANG TO TRAINING CAMP
In a strange move, the Islanders decided not to invite forward Josh Ho-Sang to training camp. The Islanders did not reveal their full camp roster but Lou Lamoriello did note there were 21 forwards, 12 defensemen and four goalies invited.
WJC UPDATE
Only one Islanders prospect remains at the World Juniors, heading into the semifinals. Simon Holmstrom's tournament ended when Sweden lost to Matias Rajaniemi and Team Finland in the quarterfinals. Holmstrom finishes the tournament with five assists in five games, while Rajaniemi heads into a semifinal matchup against the United States with no points in four games.
As for our poll questions this week, here are the results, along with my thoughts on how they turned out:
QUESTION: Are you disappointed that Derick Brassard didn’t re-sign with the Islanders?
(Votes: 184)
No: 72%
Yes: 28%
I’m going against the grain on this one and saying that I think Brassard leaving is a disappointment. The Islanders now have a hole in their top-nine and at this point, they aren’t likely to bring in anyone to replace him.
QUESTION: Who do you think will have the largest impact with the Islanders this year?
(Votes: 349)
Andy Greene: 59%
Matt Martin: 32%
Cory Schneider: 10%
I have to agree that Andy Greene is going to be the most important player of the three. He’ll be counted on as a full-time member of the team’s defense group and we’ll likely see him paired with Noah Dobson, in order to help Dobson's development.
QUESTION: Are you surprised that Josh Ho-Sang wasn’t invited to New York’s training camp?
(Votes: 385)
Yes: 61%
No: 39%
It was an odd move for sure. For the Islanders to send a qualifying offer to Ho-Sang, re-sign him, then not invite him to training camp– it just doesn’t make much sense.
QUESTION: Will Kieffer Bellows make the Islanders’ roster?
(Votes: 135)
No: 51%
Yes: 49%
Like this poll suggests it could go either way. With Brassard’s departure, the Islanders are lacking a top-nine winger and if there’s a prospect who could make the jump to play on the third line, it would be Bellows.
