The San Jose Sharks signed a player today and a prospect won a medal at the World Juniors earlier in the week. Here's the weekly recap:
SHARKS SIGN FREDRIK CLAESSON
The Sharks signed defenseman Fredrik Claesson to a one-year contract today, worth $700,000. Claesson spent the majority of the 2019-20 season in the AHL but he did also play five games with the New Jersey Devils and has played 155 career NHL games.
HATAKKA WINS BRONZE AT WJC
Prospect Santeri Hatakka won Bronze with Finland at this year’s World Juniors, after defeating Russia in the third-place game. Hatakka was the lone Sharks prospect to win a medal this year.
As for our poll questions this week, we asked the following question:
"Do you think the Sharks will finish ahead of this team in the standings this year?"
Here are the results:
AVALANCHE
(Votes: 110)
No: 88%
Yes: 12%
The Avalanche should contend for the division and even if the Sharks bounce back, they’re not on the same level as Colorado.
WILD
(Votes: 55)
Yes: 71%
No: 29%
These are two fairly evenly matched teams and goaltending could play a factor here. The Sharks do certainly have a chance to finish ahead of the Wild, however, like the results suggest.
BLUES
(Votes: 70)
No: 84%
Yes: 16%
As is the case with Colorado, San Jose’s comparison against the Blues isn’t overly close. Despite losing Alex Pietrangelo, St. Louis should still be considered a contender within the division.
GOLDEN KNIGHTS
(Votes: 44)
No: 75%
Yes: 25%
Vegas is another team who San Jose probably won’t be able to compete with in the standings. They got even better in the offseason and could make another deep playoff run this year.
DUCKS
(Votes: 45)
Yes: 60%
No: 40%
This will be a close one. The Sharks have the better offense but the Ducks have an advantage when it comes to defense and goaltending.
