Zdeno Chara announces retirement

Zdeno Chara announced his retirement from the NHL today.


Chara is 45 years old and spent this past season with the New York Islanders, playing in 72 games. He played in 1680 career NHL games, with 303 of those coming in his two stints with the New York Islanders.

The defenseman holds the record for games played by a defenseman and captained the Boston Bruins for over a decade. He also captured a Norris Trophy in 2009 and won a Stanley Cup with the Bruins in 2011.

Chara signed a one-day contract to retire as a member of the Bruins.
