Over the next few weeks on the "Mondays with Meltzer" editions of Flyers Daily on the Flyers Broadcast Network, Jason Myrtetus and I will be discussing 20 questions surrounding the Philadelphia Flyers that will play out in the weeks and months to come.
Part 1 is now available for download.
Before we begin the 20 Questions portion, we talk about locker room issues that were hinted at during Exit Day. Since his hiring, John Tortorella has made on several occasions -- strongly reiterated last week to a national audience on Sirius XM -- on why getting everyone in the locker room on the same page is the first challenge he faces. Without all players pulling the rope in the same direction, it's virtually impossible for a team accomplish anything on the ice.
Subsequently, we tackled the first eight questions on the 20 Questions list. among other topics, we discussed:
* What are the prospects for the Flyers' power play to improve in 2022-23? Coming off the second-worst power play season in franchise history and ranking dead last in the NHL there's nowhere to go but up (even without Claude Giroux). More importantly, how much will things improve?
* How confident are you that Sean Couturier will have a healthy 2022-23 season after having back surgery last year? If healthy, do you feel confident he can return to his pre-injury form?
* Was the addition of Nicolas Deslauriers this offseason something that was specifically driven by Tortorella wanting that player (or at least a similar type of veteran) for his fourth line? He's a coach who values a bit of pugnacity on his roster. Will Deslauriers' addition materially add to the element of "being hard to play against" that the new head coach extols?
* Which players will be the ones in whom Tortorella quickly gains confidence? Jason believes that Noah Cates will soon become part of that group, although he's not currently all that familiar to Tortorella. Who are the others?
* Between Travis Konecny and Ivan Provorov, which player do you think is MORE likely to have a big season under Tortorella? As a side issue, how well do you think the planned blueline partnership of Provorov and Tony DeAngelo will go both stylistically on the ice and in terms of meshing their respective personalities to forge an effective pairing?
